Having attended many virtual events, both small and large, we all know that it can be hard to make an impact and truly feel engagement from the audience. In the virtual setting, we lack the ability to see the faces of participants and read the room. This can be hard, and unfortunately the effect is a lack of engagement. Lack of engagement can lead to poor business performance, brand awareness, and interest. We can all agree NONE of us want to experience that in the best of times, let alone in COVID-19 times! So, how do we stand out in a virtually crowded room and ensure our business and brand succeeds? Read below for three tips that can help you achieve better virtual engagement:

Know Your Audience

Knowing your audience is the first aspect in engagement, especially in the virtual world. What are their interests? Their business role? How can you help them complete tasks better? These are a few of the questions you need to ask yourself before going into any virtual event, be it networking, conferences, or a presentation. To have true engagement and interest, you need to make an impact. To make an impact, you need to know the pain points and interests of whoever you are in contact with. Unsure who your audience will be? Think about what you go through on a daily basis, because chances are others are experiencing the same thing. And we can all use a helping hand.

Mindset

Scott Robley of Crucial Skills wrote a recent blog outlining how to deliver an engaging virtual presentation. One of the most impactful tips he provided was mindset. He said “It’s a limited perspective to think only about how your content will be affected by a virtual platform. Instead, think about how you can create a virtual learning experience.” This shift in mindset is key. Instead of looking at standing out and obtaining engagement virtually as being hard, think instead about all the opportunities it presents you with. From reaching new audiences, to expanding your technology abilities. A shift in our mindset has power – so start believing in yourself. You must believe in yourself before anyone else will.

Shock Value

To stand out, we have to think different, or make an impact someone can’t forget. A great way of doing this is through shock value. What is something, a statistic, a fact, etc., that won’t let people forget you? Figure out how to provide something that will get people to think big. The goal of standing out is to have people talking and thinking about you and your company long after your interaction with them is over. This is how you achieve true engagement.

We know it can feel awkward and hard to stand out and be engaging in a virtual setting. The three tips above are a few of many out there than can help you and your business. Our best advice is don’t overthink it. Treat it like any in-person event you present at or attend. What makes you good there? Utilize whatever that is in a virtual setting. Most important of all is not to give up as we are all experiencing and trying new things.
