As project managers, we know that it can sometimes be hard to gain the client participation you need. Clients are busy; their time and attention gets pulled in many directions. To be successful there are elements of any project that the project manager MUST have client participation. Below we’ve put together three tips for increasing client engagement and participation:

Know when to say NO

While this may seem a bit backwards, knowing when to tell the client no is a huge element in gaining participation. First, it builds a mutual respect. You will do your work, if they do their work. Second, it builds trust. The client knows that you go above and beyond and will always go the extra mile. When you do say “no,” it means that it is essential you take care of the item in which you are requesting their participation instead of being redirected elsewhere. This also sets the foundation for a lasting and beneficial relationship for both you and the client(s).

Show them the bigger impact

Because clients are often extremely busy (that is why they hired you!), losing sight of the bigger picture can be easy. If you’re feeling they are not actively participating, take time to show them the bigger impact their task has. Both in terms of the project itself and their daily lives. Show them how some time spent upfront saves more in the long run or puts them in a better position down the road.

Show them you care

This is one of the most effective and impactful tools you can use to help increase client participation. Knowing that you care about the project, the client’s work, and their personal life builds a sense of responsibility. The client’s sense of responsibility to you motivates them to provide all you need within the project. Showing you care helps the client know you are invested in the project’s success. When you are invested, a client knows they are required to be invested as well, no matter what else is going on.

The three examples above are just a few of the many ways you can increase client participation and keep them engaged in a project. Overall, our advice is to build a mutually respectful working relationship with all your clients. From the trust and responsibility this creates, your communication can be open and honest and project tasks can be completed on time.
