It is conference season again! No matter what industry you’re in, chances are that you and/or your team travel to at least one conference a year. Chances are even better that you go to multiple conferences a year. We know they sometimes feel exhausting and daunting. The question often arises “is it worth it to attend?” To feel and see your impact, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks to help you get the most out of all conferences and make it worthwhile to attend.

Know your Target Audience ahead of time

Most conferences have a dedicated website for the current year, as well as the past years. The websites typically include lists of attendees and sponsors. Take the time a few months before the conference to review the lists, and target people you must talk to, get business from, build partnerships with, etc. If possible, in the weeks before the conference, try to schedule meetings during breaks or meals at the conference with attendees and sponsors. Planning pays off big time.

Get involved with the organization hosting the conference

Getting involved with the organization or individuals hosting the conference is a secret to success. Nurture the relationship year round, these resources have the ability to go to bat on your behalf, and as we’ve discussed in other blogs, partnerships are a key for business success. Offer to assist the organization and be involved in the conference activities.

Visibility, visibility, visibility

This one may seem obvious, be as visible as possible at all conferences you attend. Be present at all events, ask questions during sessions, and mingle with fellow attendees/sponsors. There are ways to go beyond the usual actions. See if you can be a speaker at the conference or serve on a committee. Ask the organizers if there is any way you can be of assistance. All visibility facilitates a bigger impact. As we shared recently, QuantumMark spoke on two panels and conducted two separate presentations at a recent conference we attended, all because of the relationships and visibility we’ve built over the years with the organization. Visibility pays off!

While there are many other ways to ensure you make a big impact at a conference, and maximize your time there, the three examples above are the key ones we see many people “miss out” on. Our advice is don’t look at conferences from a negative light, instead look at them from a positive viewpoint. What can YOU do to help? What can YOU get out of it? Changing perspectives will ensure a strong ROI for you and your team.
